Cost. It will cost you a fraction of what a whole house system will. Not only the upfront cost, but the maintenance cost year after year.

Disadvantages of a Portable Generator

1. A portable generator requires some manual effort to turn it on and plug it into your house.
2. It may not be able to power as much as a whole house generator. For most customers this is perfectly fine. Having a generator that provides utility power for their heat, fridge, window AC, microwave, general lighting/outlet is all many people need.

How Does A Portable Generator Connect To My House?

There are two ways to do it. One is an interlock kit with a transfer switch and the other is a generator panel. They both have some pros and cons. Which one works best for you will depend on your individual situation. Having said that, I’m a fan of the interlock kit in most cases as it’s cheaper and gives the customer more control over what the portable generator powers.
