Wiring Evaluation & Mapping

Kuhlman Electrics™ Wire Evaluation and Mapping Service: We go through your entire house, top to bottom, looking inside each switch, light, outlet etc. to see what kind of wire is present. During this process we draw a rough diagram of the house and mark the plan with the kind of wire using a color code.

Once the entire home is complete and we have your map/plan laid out, we go back and shut down the power to each circuit. We look for Knob & Tube, ungrounded BX cable, Aluminum wiring, and ungrounded romex. Powering down the circuits needs to happen one at a time. When one is shut down, we walk through the entire house again and check what went off and make note of the circuit number powering each device, outlet, switch, light, etc. At the finish Kuhlman™ will provide you with detailed information on how your home is wired so you can make an educated decision on whether or not rewiring is the next best step.

Kuhlman Electric™ will identify all circuits, with the primary goal to check for any older circuits with outdated wiring and mark them on your plan. This mapping process can be somewhat time consuming. If the home has a lot of furniture blocking the outlets and switches, it takes a bit longer. If the switch and outlet plates were painted over, this adds to the time as well. But on average, most homes can be completed in 2-4 hours, with 2 electricians doing the map. A very large home with obstacles can take over 4 hours, but that is fairly rare.

On average we do about 1 map and evaluation every week. Typically for any type of wiring replacement identifying all wiring is part of our rewiring estimate, but homeowners also choose to pay an hourly rate for the mapping service because they wanted to know the exact cost of a full rewire before deciding to proceed, and many simply want to know what exactly what type of power delivery is behind their walls.
