Gary Kuhlman

Owner/Master Electrician
Specialties: Troubleshooting, Heating and a/c systems, residential and commercial wiring. Gary grew up in Hawaii and by age 18 was working as an electrician and attending school. He was an electrician in Hawaii for 4 years but the recession first hit in the early 1990’s. Work slowed drastically and he looked for other options. His wife was originally from Boston and she had a number of family members who were in the trades as well. One of them was kind enough to set Gary up with a job but they had to move to Massachusetts. The recession that hit Hawaii then hit Massachusetts and Gary was laid off from his job only  a few short years later.  Gary went into business for himself by the share necessity. He had a family to support and having lost his job he had no way to make ends meet.  He ran a very successful company for the next 20 years laying the foundation for what would later be called Kuhlman Electrical Services.

Why did you get into the electrical field? I have always had an instinct on how to fix things. I consider myself a handyman. I did some college majoring in political science which I left in order to find my real calling in life. I worked as a maintenance technician and I had some exposure in electrical areas which made me more interested in learning more and led to my becoming an electrician

What’s a common question you get from customers? Why did this issue happen? How much is it going to cost? How long will it take you? How did you get those wires out without making too many holes? But my favorite one is; “How long is it going to take”, given that every customer wants a quality job done right, in the shortest time possible.

What do you like most about your job? I love everything about my job; from waking up in the morning , to driving to the customers location. The drive gives me time to reflect on how I am going to tackle the task at hand, whether it’s a service call or an ongoing knob and tube project. For me, there is no better feeling than the customer flipping the switch and seeing their favorite chandelier come on or plug in an appliance and seeing the smile on their face which lights up the room more than the work I just did. I say this because I always take pride and pleasure in the work that I do but most importantly there is nothing more satisfying than leaving a job with a happy customer than the sad one I met going in. Their thanks to a job well done along with with their happiness is satisfaction enough for me!

What do you like to do when you aren’t working? When I am not working, I love to spend quality time with my family. I enjoy taking my daughter out on new adventures and playing with her.
Favorite sports teams? Enjoy watching a nice football game as well as some international soccer games.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know? I truly have a hidden talent for cooking. I used to work as a chef in various restaurants and it has definitely made me enjoy cooking as well as eating the delicious food I cook.
